City of Staples: Final Rating for Best Value Procurement Contractors

Thank you to everyone who was involved in making the City of Staples City Hall & Library project such a resounding success. This project is one of the first Best Value Procurement projects in Minnesota, and as such the attached documents summarize the final piece in the BVP process – the Rating System. There is one document from the midpoint of the project, a document that has all of the details from the end of the project, and finally a summary page that gives the overall weighted average scores.

Northway Construction is a Lead Certified Firm

The EPA recently issued a rule requiring the use of lead-safe practices and other actions aimed at preventing lead poisoning. Under the rule, beginning April 22nd 2010, contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. Until that time, HUD and EPA recommend that anyone performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes, child care facilities and schools follow lead-safe work practices.

Northway Construction Services has completed all of the required training prior to the April deadline and has received certification from the EPA as a Lead Certified Firm.

Northway Construction Wins Construction Company of the Year Award

Northway Construction Services has been recognized with the Minnesota Construction Company of the Year Award. The award, presented by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Minnesota Chapter, recognizes the recipient for quality construction and exceptional customer service. Northway Construction Services CEO Steve Northway accepted the award on Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 at the annual Minnesota ABC Chapter Awards Banquet.

“Receiving this recognition from our peers in the industry is a significant honor,” says J.J. Levenske, President of the Baxter-based firm. “It’s also a great testament to the craftsmanship and hard work regularly demonstrated by the entire Northway Construction team, as well as our talented partners.”

Ed Northway Earns LEED AP Credential

Ed Northway, Vice President of Northway Construction Services, recently passed the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) certification examination to be designated as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP).

To earn the credential, Northway was required to demonstrate a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles and the LEED Rating System. He passed a comprehensive written exam on June 12 to be designated as a building professional with the knowledge and skills to successfully steward the LEED certification process.

Northway was project manager for the first LEED-certified home in Minnesota, a Northway Construction Services project. He points out that that the company’s goal is to incorporate sustainable design into as many projects as possible, even if a client decides not to formally pursue LEED certification.

Northway received 196 out of 200 points on the examination.

Staples City Hall Groundbreaking

Northway Construction has completed a major remodel of the City of Staples, Minn., police station and has broken ground for a new city hall and library building that will emphasize energy efficiency and sustainable building practices.

Staples City Administrator Nathan Mathews said, “Northway Construction focuses on extending a building’s life cycle by building wisely, not cheaply. Northway Construction focuses on quality site design, material selection, energy design, and superior construction practices. In Staples we have seen this benefit on both a remodeling and new construction basis. Northway Construction is one of a few select firms in Minnesota to have led a local government through a facility construction/remodel project using the Best Value procurement method. This new contracting method allows local government to enter into contracts by choosing the best bid, not necessarily the lowest.”
